Longevity, Regeneration, and Optimal Health, a publication by William C. Bushell is truly extraordinary regarding its breadth in scope. It is a thorough review of much of Western Science understandings thus far of the ancient Eastern wisdom yoga, and specifically meditation. Just past the preface and overview, the first article is entitled Longevity. Investigating the effects on health and life-span of meditation, yogic breathing, exercises, and dietary practices some interesting results are uncovered.
“Recently, a large-scale epidemiologic study comparing hypertensive practitioners of Transcendental Meditation (TM) with matched hypertensive controls over two decades revealed a 23% decrease in all-cause mortality (primary outcome), while secondary analyses showed a 30% decrease in the rate of cardiovascular mortality and a 49% de-crease in cancer-related mortality.”
From reduced age related oxidative stress, to slowing of metabolic rate to that of a hibernating animal as well as getting many of its benefits. Reduced inflammatory processes and boosted immune response. Exercise clearly improving our ‘health-span’ if not anything else, and caloric restriction based diets (similarly, yogic or ascetic diet) having a positive effect on all age markers. The results just do not stop impressing.
